Alexander Millar - The Rat Pack
Working Man - Museum Collection
This is a scene that was played out over and over in shipyards, mines and places of industry throughout the world as
men would finish their shifts and meander home after a hard days graft.
People always say to me why do your old men hunch forwards as they walk along? Well when you consider the
hard work that these old soldiers did its no wonder they looked as though they had the weight of the world on their
shoulders. I spent only 3 years on the building sites as a joiner and that was bad enough. I dread to think what
conditions were like for the working man of yesterday and yet, I never heard a word of complaint from my father or
grandfather. They got on with the job.
